Annabelle
It was love at first sight. From the moment I saw the picture of the sweet faced little dapple girl, my heart was set. But when I heard her story, that's when I knew she needed me as much as I needed her. Annabelle, as she was to be,lived her first years of life as part of a large scale back yard breeder's racket. When this breeder tired of her, he sold her in a "lot" (yes, like a "lot" of clothing or collectible mugs on Ebay) with several other dogs to another person. Instead of breaking the cycle, this woman continued it. When Annabelle was turned over to the GCDR in May of 2009, she had delivered her last set of puppies in APRIL. A person who saw the conditions that Annabelle and her sister, Bella, who is a double dapple and is missing an eye due to poor breeding resulting in genetic defects, came from she described it with tears in her eyes, saying it was an absolute mess, with dogs in kennels everywhere. So, as I said, I decided that my home would be the best place for this poor lost soul. Then: more bad news. Annabelle was found to be heartworm positive. The people who bred her and sold her puppies and reaped the money from her suffering could not be bothered to spend TWENTY DOLLARS for six months of preventatives. So, I waited, anxiously. Weeks went by, then months. Annabelle took treatment like a champ. And finally, the day came that she was going to come home to me. But wait, there is still something I have not told you. Annabelle was in Louisiana. I live in South Carolina. How was I going to get my little one home? The kindness of good hearted people. Five wonderful people volunteered their time to drive a transport all the way home to me, some of them I know, some I have never met. Annabelle passed from hand to hand, hour by hour, and then- the joyous moment! She was home!
Annabelle weighs about 8.5 pounds now, and she is at a good weight. She's my tiny dancer. She is now happy and healthy, with a warm bed, and two big brothers to look out for her (Charlie and Bailey, my two boy dachsies) She is still timid, and cringes when I bend down to pick her up, which breaks my heart, but I know that as she realizes what the good life is, her fear will abate. She loves squeaky toys, and is over the moon for walkies. She follows myself and my husband all around the house, and is starting to give tiny kisses.
We are so blessed to have this sweet girl in our lives, and we are going to give her the best life possible.
Peanut
Peanut, now named Pretzel, was adopted by a wonderful Canadian family who also adopted her brother and sister Pepsi and Peanut. Collectively they are known as the P' Snacks!
